"The Super Bowl isn't for kids, I had a great time though and it was worth every nickel of it because by doing this lame piece about the game I can put it on my expense account."
~~ Andy Rooney, (January 14, 1919 – November 4, 2011) American radio and television writer; Most notable for his weekly broadcast "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney," and part of the CBS News program 60 Minutes from 1978 to 2011. His final regular appearance on 60 Minutes aired October 2, 2011. He died one month later, on November 4, 2011, at age 92.
With the digital ecosystem (e.g. Twitter, YouTube, Hulu, Facebook, etc.) in constant motion, comes a wealth of options for advertising campaigns. This is becoming more prevalent as more creative advertisements rely on user participation via social media and crowd sourcing.
The decision of whether to release a Super Bowl ad in advance, just have a teaser campaign or hold off altogether until Super Bowl Sunday is what many CMO's consider.
Particularly in light of the fact that the Super Bowl 2012 online audience was 3 times larger than the reported 111 million Super Bowl 2012 TV viewership -- supporting the trend that television audiences are being replaced by the online and mobile audiences and social media's ripple effect spreads information quickly.
Practically all of the Super Bowl 2013 ads have been pre-released online, with the exception of a few who held off and implemented "teaser ads."
Overall, the advertising strategy and theme revolves around user engagement which is why the existing trend of teaser campaigns is slowly but surely being replaced by TV commercials that request consumers help them by casting their vote online through social media.
Besides the obvious increase in exposure, last year roughly 1 and half million consumers viewed Super Bowl 2012 ads on YouTube whereas a total of over 9 million viewed them prior to Super Bowl Sunday. (source: http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/01/30/volkswagen-super-bowl-ad/ also listed in "additional information" below)
From Coke asking consumers to choose their favorite ending and Pepsi asking for fan photos that will appear during the Pepsi Halftime show, to Audi asking viewers to share their brave moments, Doritos® wanting consumers to pick which ad should run on Super Bowl Sunday, and Toyota asking consumers to share their wish on Twitter, it is apparent the cultural movement of sports, particularly the Super Bowl, is progressively shifting towards social media and crowd sourcing.
TV advertisers who do not integrate internet relevancy and social media campaigns stand a great chance of losing leverage and compromising the brand.
Of the seven user participation ads, Audi, Coke and Doritos will show the winning TV ad on Super Bowl Sunday with the help of on consumer votes. Budweiser, with a reputation of having he most original and creative, implemented teaser ads only with no user participation.
A total of seven advertisers, roughly a fifth (or 19%) of the total 36 Super Bowl advertisers included user participation that involved heavy social media and crowd sourcing.
Below is a list of the seven advertisers who implemented social media and user participation in their advertising campaigns:
Audi – Prom Night features 3 videos “Worth It,” “Buddies” and “Tradition. Viewers Share your brave moment, and vote online at and can choose how it should end by picking 1 of the 3 videos. The final spot was announced on Jan. 27 and will air during the Super Bowl.
Coke CokeChase contest – a bus of showgirls, caravan of bad landers and posse of cowboys all on a desert compete for a GIANT bottle of coke. Vote on who you want to win the chase on the CokeChase.com Web site. http://www.cokechase.com/index.html
Doritos Frito Lay – http://www.crashthesuperbowl.com/ “Crash the Superbowl” lists the 5 video finalists on Facebook; to name a few - “Fetch,” “Road Chip,” and “Fashionista Daddy,” on Facebook and asks for your vote.
Lincoln – “The Story Behind the Script” ad Stars NFL Emmitt Smith, the DJ voice only talking to the lady in the car. Curated by Jimmy Fallon (who collected the script ideas). The “SteerTheScript.com” and share road trip experience, took 6 million tweets and Jimmy Fallon picked the ones he liked to create the 30 secon spot for the 3rd, quarter; Viewers can also go see the 90 second version online.
Pepsi, Sponsor of the Halftime show, asks viewers to participate by tweeting what’s happening (ended Jan 11th) at #PepsiHalftime pepsi. The photo submission ended 1/21/13
Pizza Hut's "HUT HUT HUT" commercial wants viewers to believe that the "hut" shouted by quarterbacks at the center actually is for the Hut in Pizza Hut. In return, Pizza Hut salutes quarterbacks in this year's Super Bowl commercial “Thanks for the shout outs,” Now share your best "hut hut hut" at facebook.com/pizzahut.
Toyota, Let’s Go Places #WishGranted Asks viewers to tweet their wish at #wishgranted where Kelly Cuoco will grant some wishes. http://youtu.be/iymBRSUfz9U

What do you think? Are the social media and pre-releases of Super Bowl 2013 ads good thing for user engagement or do you prefer to be surprised on Super Bowl Sunday?
There’s still time for some advertisers to participate and to join as an online panelist to rank the Super Bowl with USA Today’s Ad Meter. http://admeter.usatoday.com/

"This is pitiful. A thousand people, freezing their butts off, waiting to worship a rat! What a hype. Well they used to mean something in this town, they used to pull the hog out and they used to eat it. You're hypocrites! All of ya! You got a problem with what I'm saying, Larry? Untie your tongue and you come out here and talk, huh? Am I upsetting you, Princess? You know you want a prediction about the weather, you're asking the wrong Phil. I'll give you a prediction. It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's gonna last you the rest of your life." ~~ Bill Murray, American actor and comedian, as quoted in the 1993 critically acclaimed film "Groundhog Day"
It’s that time of year again, when a funny furry fortune-teller comes out and predicts six more weeks of winter if he casts a shadow – if no shadow, early spring is here.
Occurring every year on February 2nd, dates for the entire celebration begin February 1st - February 3rd, and Punxsy Phil will predict what the next 6 weeks of weather will be.
Amazingly, for over two centuries, (1886 or earlier) crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered at Gobbler's Knob hill at Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to celebrate. Other celebrations taking place in Pennsylvania include Quarryville in Lancaster County, the Anthracite Region of Schuylkill County, and Bucks County.
The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Groundhog Day received more mass attention after the release of the 1993 comedy film “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murray who plays Phil Connors, an egotistical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, dreams living February 2nd over and over while repeatedly indulging in hedonism and numerous suicide attempts.
Finally he wakes up and realizes his life matters and prioritizes and makes drastic changes and improvements. In 2006, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
YouTube Video: Groundhog Day - Phil (Bill Murray) Steals Phil (The Groundhog)
Many wonder just how scientific is Punxsy Phil's shadow. According to groundhogday.org, the furry fortune teller is accurate 75% to 90% of the time, while a Canadian study of 13 states has the success rate at 37% and the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) has the overall prediction rate at 39% accurate (since 1987).
The Stormfax Weather Almanac reports Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 100 times, no shadow 16 times with no record 9 times.
Groundhog day in Staten Island is sponsored by Time Warner Cable and garnered with trumpets to wake up the little Staten Island's very own woodchuck, "Chuck," as the Staten Island Zoo opens its gates at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 2.
Staten Island Chuck, or Charles G. Hogg as he is known in formal company, will make his prediction at 7:30 a.m. and the ceremony is free.
What do you think? Do you believe in the science or spirit of Groundhog Day?

“…If there is one constant about Grand Central, it is certainly my awe every time I enter the main concourse. I have certainly been there a million times, but I am still always amazed. There is a little part of me that is envious of all the Metro-North employees that are employed in this beautiful building, and see it every day. I’ve taken photos here a million times as well, and I don’t think I am ever pleased with any of them, for they never seem to do the place any justice. Beauty can be found throughout – not just in the concourse or on the front façade. The little details always captivate me, from the stylized GCT monogram, to the little sculptural acorns that can be found all over – a symbol of the Vanderbilt family.…” ~~ iRideTheHarlemLine Blog
Hard to believe, New York City’s most historical landmarks and business train station in the country, Grand Central Station, www.grandcentralterminal.com turns 100 today.
Exactly 100 years ago, the keys to Grand Central were first given to the stationmaster on Feb. 1, 1913.
Formally named Grand Central Terminal (GCT), but popularly called Grand Central Station, is a commuter rail terminal station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue (89 East 42nd St.) in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States.
Built by and named for the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger rail travel, GCT is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms, which total 44, and 67 tracks along them.
The tracks are on two levels, both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though the total number of tracks along platforms and in rail yards exceeds 100. The terminal covers an area of 48 acres.
Today will begin the celebration which starts with the West Point Brass and Percussion Band performing the world premiere of “Grand Central Centennial Fanfare.”
Grand Central was once a long-distance train terminal but now serves commuters going to and from New York’s northern suburbs via Metro-North Railroad. A New York City subway station also connects to the building and the complex has dozens of shops and restaurants, including the venerable Oyster Bar.
According to the travel magazine Travel + Leisure in its October 2011 survey, Grand Central Terminal is "the world's number six most visited tourist attraction", bringing in approximately 21,600,000 visitors annually
Several of Grand Central’s businesses will be offering special 1913 deals to celebrate including a 75 cent cocktail at Michael Jordan’s The Steak House N.Y.C. and a 19 cent slice of cheesecake at the Oyster Bar.
Celebrations will be planned throughout the year, including a performance by artist Nick Cave on March 25-31 and a parade of historic trains on May 10-12.
“The truth is the Super Bowl long ago became more than just a football game. It's part of our culture like turkey at Thanksgiving and lights at Christmas, and like those holidays beyond their meaning, a factor in our economy.” ~~ Bob Schieffer, American television journalist who has been with CBS News for 44 years and principal anchor since 1973. Schieffer has a total of 56 years as a reporter and was selected to be inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame alont with CBS CEO Les Moonves.
This year, the Super Bowl XLVII will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday, February 3rd where NFC champion San Francisco 49ers will play the AFC Baltimore Ravens. Super Bowl Sunday is known as the biggest day of the year for TV ads and known as an American cultural phenomenon.
Besides the excitement of the football game and the commercial TV ad spots, CBS 2013 Super Bowl halftime show is the most watched musical event of the year.
This year features 16-time Grammy Award winner and Pepsi spokesperson, Beyonce, who will perform during the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII halftime show. Will Beyonce “lip sync” or not?
According to a recent The New York Times article, "Super Bowl Commercial Time Is A Sellout," CBS has sold all available commercial time for Super Bowl 2013 with record-breaking prices. Les Moonves, CEO of CBS, has also said that he anticipates raking in more than $225 million in advertising revenue.
So how much do these ads really cost? Ad Age states that the costs have increased slightly from the "casual $3.5 million to an average of $3.7 to $3.8 million." Some spots cost as high as $4 million. This calculates to an average rate of $126,667 per second using the $3.8 million per 30-second spot ad.
A total of six automakers are expected to advertise eight car brands during the game, while six additional companies will advertise eight beverages.
Super Bowl first-time-advertisers include The Lincoln Motor Company (Ford), Soda Stream, The Milk Processor Education Program (i.e., famous for the “Got Milk” print ads), and a few other notables.

"There are three things in life that people like to stare at: a flowing stream, a crackling fire, and a Zamboni clearing the ice." ~~ Charlie Brown Zamboni fan, protagonist in the comic strip Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, as quoted from a 1980 Charles Shultz
Charlie Brown Peanus film special "She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.”
Google is celebrating the 112th birthday of Frank Zamboni, inventor of the ice-resurfacing machine, with an interactive Google Doodle that is an interactive game where the player must clean the surface of an ice rink using an ice resurfacer.
Happy 112th B-Day to Frank Zamboni born Frank Joseph Zamboni, Jr. (January 16, 1901 – July 27, 1988). Zamboni was an Italian-American inventor, world known for his famous invention, the modern, ice resurfacer, with his surname being registered as a trademark.
Since the early 1950s, the Zamboni has become a cultural phenomenon and holds a very special place for many skaters’ (and non-skaters’) hearts for recreational skating, professional skating, professional ice hockey and other sports but particularly the beauty and magic of turning worn out ice into pristine work of art. Even Charles Schultz, creator of the cartoon characters, Snoopy, along with Charlie Brown and his friends have long been favorites of the Zamboni Company. In 1991 Snoopy was winner of the prestigious World's Top Zamboni Driver award.
Charles Schulz has included Zamboni in 44 of his famous Charlie Brown cartoons. Schulz first included the Zamboni in his famous PEANUTS comic strip in January of 1980.
Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Marcie and Peppermint Patty have often commented on the machine with Snoopy and Woodstock becoming two of the most famous Zamboni drivers…in fact, Snoopy's outstanding and unquestioned talent as a Zamboni operator won him the prestigious World's Top Zamboni Driver award in 1991.
Zamboni was born in 1901 in Eureka, Utah to Italian immigrants. His parents soon bought a farm in Lava Hot Springs near Pocatello, Idaho, where he grew up. In 1920, he moved with his parents to the harbor district of Los Angeles, where his older brother George was operating an auto repair shop.
After Frank attended a trade school in Chicago, he and his younger brother Lawrence opened an electrical supply business in 1922 in the Los Angeles suburb of Hynes (now part of Paramount).
The following year he married and eventually had three children. In 1927, he and Lawrence added an ice-making plant and entered the block ice business. They continued their ice business in 1939 but saw little future in that business with the advent of electrically operated refrigeration units. They decided to use their excess refrigeration equipment to open an ice rink nearby.
“Circle the Zambonis.” ~~Snoopy Winner of the 1991 World's Top Zamboni Driver Award; Answering Charlie Brown's question from Shultz's "Zamboni Machine Comic Series"
In 1940, he and his brothers, along with a cousin, opened Iceland rink, which became very popular, particularly because Frank had devised a way to eliminate rippling caused by the pipes that were laid down to keep the rink frozen. (The rink still operates and is still owned by the Zamboni family.)
He obtained a patent for that innovation in 1946 and then in 1949 he invented a machine that transformed the job of resurfacing an ice rink from a three-man, 90-minute task to a one-man, 10-minute job. He applied for a patent that same year and set up Frank J. Zamboni & Co. in Paramount to build and sell the machines.
He obtained his patent in 1953. In the early 1950s he built them on top of Jeep CJ-3Bs, then on stripped Jeep chassis from 1956 through 1964. Demand for the machine proved great enough that his company added a second plant in Brantford, Ontario and a branch office in Switzerland.
Though the term Zamboni was (and remains) trademarked by his company, the name is sometimes improperly used for any brand of ice resurfacing machine.

“You ladies never have to pretend to be attracted to Harry Weinstein again.” ~~ Seth MacFarlane American actor, comedian, producer, director, and singer, quoted during Oscar 2013 announcements (January 10, 2013)
Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced Oscar nominations for the 2013 Academy Awards on Thursday morning, January 10th at 5:38 a.m. Pacific Time.
Amazingly, all 5 best actor nominees have won Oscars before. Also worth mentioning is that best actress nominee, Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook," is the youngest actress to have 2 Oscar nominations by age 22. Silver Linings is the only movie to have all 4 acting category nominations – the last time this milestone was reached was 39 years ago from the film "Reds" in 1981.
"Lincoln" received the most Oscar nominations including best director category, and this film will most likely win “best picture” as it is very difficult for a film to receive that without also receiving a nomination for best director, and this epic film leads the pack with 12 nominations.
A few surprises were that past film director Oscar winners, Catherine Bigelow, "Zero Dark Thirty," Ben Affleck for “Argo,” and Tom Hooper for “Les Miserables,” did not receive best director nominations.
Also, Affleck did not get nominated in the “Best Actor” category. No director nomination for Quentin Tarantino for "Django Unchanged;" however, this controversial movie did receive nominations for best picture and original screenplay.
Silver Linings Playbook received nominations for just about every popular category. Quvenshane' Wallis for Beast of the Southern Wild is the youngest actress at 9 years young (and only 6 at the time of filming), to receive an Oscar nomination for best actress. The oldest Oscar nominee is Emmanuelle Riva for Amour who will be 86 years old on Oscar night.
The Oscars are voted on by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. More information on the voting process is available at the Academy's website.
The Golden Globes will take place Sunday, January 13th and is voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press.
Oscar night this year will be Sunday, February 24th.
