September 11th, 2001 – Fourteen Years Later ▓▌▄▒║ ▓║ ║▌

Fourteen years ago today our country was attacked, crumbling NYC's World Trade Center.
I turned this controversial photo upside-down 4 years ago to celebrate the 10th year and today marks 14 years of resilience; Also a symbol of rising peace. Flagship 1 WTC stands at the symbolic height of 1776, when we Americans declared our independence and "all men created equal," now once again, 1776 beautifying NYC's skyline. This photo is symbolic for our rising towers, faith and independence. I share this post (update it a bit) every anniversary year.

Emotionally charged, mixed feelings - 2001 to 2015. From Poet Laureate, Billy Collins' prose commemorating all of the 9/11 victims, "The Names," posted below, to one of the most provocative, unforgettable images by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew, of a man falling from the twin towers, positioned perfectly in the middle. The photo was taken at about 9:41 am on 9/11/01 -- 15 minutes before the 1st building, the South tower, collapsed. Videos would show that the falling man was actually a tumbling man in the air and this is one moment in his time that was captured.

Note how perfectly straight, positioned in the middle and parallel to the burning towers the falling man is. The above photo was branded distasteful and voyeuristic -- never to be shown again, yet the incredible "falling man" is still around.

There is much up side 14 years later. By the 11th anniversary (2012) the new multibillion-dollar World Trade Center, was back up in lower Manhattan's skyline.

One World Trade Center (formerly known as the Freedom Tower) which was completed on August 30, 2012 with the final component of its spire installed on May 10, 2013.

Additional complexes include 7 World Trade Center, three other high-rise office buildings, a museum and memorial, and a transportation hub similar in size to Grand Central Terminal. The Four World Trade Center is on track for completion and occupancy by 2014. The 9/11 memorial is complete, and the museum opened May 21, 2014. Three World Trade Center and the Transportation Hub (originally opened in 1903)are set to be finished by 2015. Two World Trade Center's full construction has been placed on hold until tenants are found, but it is still expected to be completed before 2020. Budgeted at 3.9 billion upon completion, flagship, One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, has been opened since November 3, 2014. At 104 stories (1368 feet high), the decorative architectural spire atop makes the building stand at the symbolic height of 1,776 feet. Observation decks will adorn the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors. At 72 stories (977ft high) Four World Trade Center, was the first office building to open, (October 2013). First tenants were Port Authority, the Bistate agency that owns the trade center site and lost its headquarters when the twin towers were attacked. According to many articles and documentaries, there were about 200 people who jumped to their deaths, some were able to be identified only for the victim’s families and to provide closure for them. But there was no time to recover or identify those who were forced to jump prior to the collapse of the towers. We lost almost 3,000 lives that day.

Where were you on 9/11/2001?
I was working on Wall Street( on the corner of Wall and Water Streets). It was a beautiful, clear skied morning. I arrived early as I usually do and was at my desk on the computer when I heard a loud bang and felt rumbling underneath my desk at 8:46 a.m. I shouted "What was that?" Then 15 minutes later another bang, as some fellow employees arrived - initially we thought it was from a missile. Hard to imagine it would be the biggest single attack on American lives. I still keep asking myself "how could this be?" I was curious and ran outside to see what was happening.

As I was walking on Water St. and reached Liberty St., it was at about 10:00 am, I saw large billows of gray smoke, appearing to turn day to night, enveloping hundreds if not thousands of people running for their lives – apparently heading towards the river. I asked some folks what is happening and all were in shock. With all the commotion, all they could say while they were running was “it’s down, it’s down.” At that moment, I thought another plane came down. I ran back to the office and learned from colleagues that the South tower collapsed (incidentally, this was the 2nd building hit). The North tower (1st building hit) collapsed at about 30 minutes later. And the world would never be the same.

Today is Labor Day. Happy 133rd Labor Day America. Let’s admit it, this holiday has been amazingly ironic over the past several years:

Imagine American’s celebrating workers, particularly in light of our country’s high unemployment rates which are a lot higher than our government reports.

Stats and economy aside, all across America, this holiday which was once symbolic for back to school, the end of the summer and the archaic fashion trend – where wearing white after Labor Day is a fashion faux pas – have all been passé for years. Fashion trends rarely pay attention to this rule; Also back to school shopping is now done during the end of July and month of August.

For the many attentive parents and their children, it's the end of summer reading programs and making sure all of their children's book reports and other assignments are in order.

In a world of digital, it is also a great idea to use the internet for exciting news and interesting ideas. SchoolsNYC.org, SummerReading.org, and Scholastic.com are very helpful sites.

So much happens over the summer and discussing a few books (or just 1)that your child has read, (a simple question will do) is a great refresher and memory exercise. This also best prepares your child for the first day of school.

What about vacation? Talk about a great memory or event during summer family visits and travels.

One hundred and thirty three years ago (1882), Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annuallabour festival held in Toronto, Canada. Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday on February 21, 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day.

In the United States, Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

In many countries, the working classes sought to make May Day an official holiday, and their efforts largely succeeded. In the United States and Canada, however, the official holiday for workers is Labor Day in September. This day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City.

After the Haymarket Massacre, US President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

This year  Blogger  is celebrating it's Sweet Sixteen? Happy Sweet 16th to Blogger. Google doodle? If so it will be posted here at a later time. As of March 2015, Blogger ranks 93 on Alexa Internet, Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com).

Do you think that blogging is like sex? If so why?

Many who write blogs, do it for the love and the passion they have. Be it for sharing experiences, ideas, etc. True blogging (like true love) is something you simply cannot fake.

Another aspect that comes to mind is gender bias. Do men have different perspectives about blogging than women? Are men more likely to equate blogging to having sex? Are women more likely to equate it to passion or love?

Would you write a blog that would deceive your readers? Would you have sex and deceive your partner or fake an orgasm?

Obviously, it's better to refrain from writing blogs (having sex) if doing so out of desperation, which ultimately leads to shallow blogs (cheap, superficial, unfulfilled sex and relationships).

On the positive note, the more one blogs the more one improves just as the more one loves the more meaningful relationships. So the next time you begin writing your blog post, think of all the love and passion you bring.

You might come up with quite a few surprises for yourself and your readers. Go ahead "blog your brains out." #BlogYourBrainsOut

Bloggers main objectives are to write blogs that engage readers. This is the most difficult as it takes creativity, passion, and uniqueness. Unfortunately, writing to become popular or rich and famous compromises a writer's potential. The best blogers are those who write and post to share stories, thoughts, opinions, passions, expertise and perspectives.

The number of bloggers in the U.S. has increased over the past 7 years (2007 to 2014), yet writers who have primary sources of income from blogs are still relatively few in relation to the overall U.S. blogging population. Wolfgangjaegel.com reported an increase of 31% more bloggers in the past three years.

According to "Rise of Blogger" http://wolfgangjaegel.com/rise-of-the-bloggers-blogging-statistics-2014/ "In the past 5 years, blogging has SKYROCKETED and created a living for millions and is an integral part of businesses today."

However, although bloggers with primary source of incomes from blogging increased nearly 450% in the past 5 years -- to 8% (2.48 million) from less than a quarter of 1% (.02% or 452,000 bloggers) in 2007 -- the representation is very insignificant compared to the remaining 28,520,000 bloggers who are unable to earn a minimal income from blogging.

International Telecommunications UnionTotal worldwide reports that global internet users have increased nearly 3% over the past 3 years -- from 6.9 billion in 2010 to 7.1 billion in 2013 with the largest worldwide subscriptions from Mobile broadband representing a 161% 3 year increase -- from 11.3% in 2010 to 29.5% in 2013. Not surprising, mobile is here to stay.

China still ranks 1st at 42.3% penetration (568,192,066 users vs 538 million users the prior year) of the 7.1 billion world internet users and India the same rank of 3rd at 12.6% penetration (151,598,994 vs 137 million users the prior year). USA has also remained 2nd with 254,295,536 users and 81% penetration.

• 1994 – In January, Jerry Yang and David Filo create "Jerry's Guide to the WWW" while studying at Stanford University and rename it Yahoo in April

• 1999 – Although bookmarking was around earlier, bookmarking became popular in businesses and mainstream during this period

• 2000 – Sites are optimized for search engines that were being catalogued on the Web

• 1997 – The first blog goes online, known as “weblog” originally used as a niche for geeks; Weblog was coined in December 1997 by Jorn Barger 

• 1997 – The phrase “search engine optimization” is mostly likely coined during this period, according to Danny Sullivan of  The New York Times

• 2004 - The first Annual Advertising Week Conference begins in September in New York City

• 2004 -  Web 2.0 O’Reilly Conference is held on October 5 – 7, 2004 at the Hotel Nikko in San Francisco, CA. Although about16 years into Web 0.0 and 5 years into Web 2.0, we still do not know where it is going; Transformational elements are unknown as Web-Web2.0 are still new and the industry has no idea of what infrastructures will go away. Many innovations with no ads, no subscription feeds, free to the end user, are floating on venture capital. Big issue is these innovations lack business models and it is predicted that many of these web innovations probably will not survive unless purchased, merged, with a larger company, etc.

• Wikipedia and Blogs become mainstream; Momentum is largely attributable to the announcement of Web 2.0
• February 2004 Flickr (image tag base navigation becomes available)
• February 2004 - it is estimated that Facebook has over 10 billion photos from over 125 million users by the end of 2004 (Facebook & Flickr become the biggest privacy disasters)

• 2005 – National Governments all over the world embrace Web 2.0 and create official blogs; Israel is the first country to have a government blog, IsraelPolitik

• 2005 - February 2005 – YouTube

• 2005 – August 2005 - Library Thing

• 2005 – Wordpress.com opens to beta testers on August 8, 2005 and to the public on November 21, 2005.

• 2005 – Search Engine Marketing advertising spending is at approximately $5.8 billion (a 363% increase from 2002)

• 2005 – Google begins personalizing search results by users dependent upon user’s previous search history

• 2005 – In December, Microsoft and the Outlook team announce they are using the RSS feed icon which was first used in the Mozilla Firefox Browser 

• 2006 - $18.7 billion on internet ads was invested worldwide in 2006

• 2006 – Twitter is launched in October and evolves into a virtual water cooler experience having the power to hold social groups; Users can chat away about what they're doing and if anyone is interested in knowing, they can read, or watch what you’re doing and reply, follow, etc.; E.g., discuss iPhone feature,  communicate with people in different parts of the world separated in space and time; Although it is not the same as face to face it is similar enough to feel some kind of connection to people using twitter, Facebook or Youtube

• 2006 – Search Engine Marketing takes the lead in advertising and grows much faster than traditional advertising and other online marketing channels; US SEM advertising spending reaches approximately $9.4 billion, (a 62% increase over 2005 US spending); Worldwide, US 2006 ad spending had a 38% marketshare of total global internet ad spending calculated at $24.9 billion internet ads invested worldwide in 2006 (an increase of 33% from the previous year’s worldwide ad spending); Interesting to note that Jupiter’s estimate back in August 2001 was off by almost $10.0 billion less than actual of $9.4 billion

Google.com becomes abc.xyz and G is for Google

In the new Alphabet world at abc.xyz, G is for Google.

As of Monday, August 10, Google has a new name, “Alphabet.”

Who would think that the renamed, reorganized, Google corporation, is officially named after a set of 26 letters in fixed order, “Alphabet.”

Of course, Google remains its own, fine-tuned, Google brand as the internet arm for Search, Advertising, Google Maps, YouTube, Chrome, Android, Google Apps, etc.; However, Google will be owned by the newly created company Alphabet where G = Google. Will C = Calico, F = Fiber, N = Nest, X = Google X, etc. ?

According to a recent blog by Google co-Founder Larry Page,

“What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead … Alphabet is about businesses prospering through strong leaders and independence … For Sergey and me this is a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google -- the birth of Alphabet. We liked the name Alphabet because it means a collection of letters that represent language, one of humanity's most important innovations, and is the core of how we index with Google search!” #GisforGoogle #Alphabet #abc.xyz

REORGANIZATION OF GOOGLE – What does this mean?

All of the other venture projects, i.e., Google X (moonshot which includes driverless cars and delivery drones) Calico (biotech research), Nest (smart home projects), Fiber (high-speed internet), Ventures and Capital (investing), once part of Google, will operate under Alphabet as separate entities. Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have new titles, Alphabet CEO and Alphabet President, respectively.

Google’s new CEO is Sundar Pichai (formerly Larry Page’s deputy), who according to a recent Bloomberg post, is known as the “most powerful man in mobile.” #GisforGoogle #Alphabet #abc.xyz

Many leading economists equate this recent Google strategy to Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway business model. Although quite different, (i.e., Google innovative non-consumer product vs. Berkshire Hathaway ordinary consumer products) Berkshire’s Insurance business is the key income generator for Berkshire Hathaway just as Google Search is the key income generator for Alphabet. For the economy it means more jobs including more CEOs for many of Alphabet’s emerging entities, more financing and investment opportunities, and continued technological innovations.

RESTRUCTURING OF GOOGLE STOCK – If you own Google’s stock, what will you do?

Apparently this new stock structure has to do with transparency for Google’s investments and the new Alphabet will make future acquisitions much more seemless than before. Do you think this restructuring will shed an entirely new light to disruptive innovation and turn the markets upside down?

According to the company’s recent SEC filing, Alphabet will gradually replace Google as the publicly traded company on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Therefore all shares of Google will convert to shares of Alphabet and will represent the same amount of shares. This merger will most likely occur sometime later this year. #GisforGoogle #Alphabet

Bugs Bunny’s most famous catchphrase introduced at the debut of cartoon short, “A Wild Hare,” on July 27, 1940

Hard to believe, the world's smartest cartoon character, Bugs Bunny, turns 75 years young today (7/27/15). Bugs was born with the release of cartoon short, "A Wild Hare," directed by Tex Avery, on July 27, 1940.

According to the publication "Bugs Bunny: 50 Years and Only One Grey Hare," Bugs was born in Brooklyn, New York, in a warren under Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Actually, he was created by many animators and staff, including Tex Avery. According to the late Mel Blanc, the character's original voice actor, Bugs has a Flatbush accent.




A Wild Hare, is the first cartoon where both Elmer Fudd and Bugs are shown in their fully developed forms as hunter and tormentor.

In this cartoon Mel Blanc first uses what would become Bugs' standard voice; this cartoon also marks the first time that Bugs uses his catchphrase, "What's up, Doc?"


Animation historian Joe Adamson deems "A Wild Hare" as the first "official" Bugs Bunny short. The short was a huge success in theaters and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Google celebrates the partnership of NASA and Facebook’s Instagram sneak-peek exploratory Pluto photo

NASA let Facebook-owned Instagram sneak peek Pluto photos and Google celebrates the partnership of NASA and Facebook’s Instagram sneak-peek exploratory Pluto photo with a lovely animated doodle. Pluto’s sneak peek photo on Instagram marks the first time NASA has given social media the first shot, sneak peek to its space exploratory photo.

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft traveled for 9 years, 3 billion miles, at 14km per second (roughly 1.79 miles per second) around Pluto capturing the very first image today (July 13) at 4 p.m. (E.D.T.) at 476,000 miles from Pluto’s surface. The closest and most detailed image was photographed later this morning at 7:49 a.m.

NASA’s live briefing on NASA TV began 8 a.m. today at NASA TV, and the high resolution photo will be posted at NASA.gov with more coverage on NASA TV throughout the day.

NASA also agreed to give Facebook's Instagram, which currently has 300 million users, a head start by allowing it to post the first image 7.a.m. before official release. The NASA Instagram is very popular and has over 3.5 million followers. For decades has been much debate and challenge as to the size of Pluto due to many factors including Pluto's atmosphere. With NASA’s latest New Horizons spacecraft mission the size of Pluto is estimated at 1,473 miles (2,370 kilometers) in diameter, somewhat larger than many prior estimates.

Pluto is the second-most massive direct orbit of the Sun in the Solar System and ninth largest (tenth-most massive) known object directly orbiting the Sun. Eight planets orbit the sun, listed in order closest to the Sun: Mercury,Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Once classified as a planet, Pluto, is now classified as a dwarf planet or plutoid.

Happy 239th Independence Day America! Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and safe one.

However you spend it and whatever you do, please remember to not text while driving or while playing with fireworks. Hard to believe, I swear you can't make this up: This morning on my way home from the Jersey Shore, a lady driver was in her car plucking hairs from her chin on Hope Road before the right turn onto the Garden State Parkway not only during the red light but continuing tweezing even when the light turned green. She must have a hell of a lot of hair on her chin.


Although President Adams's Independence Day prediction was July 2, the actual date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress, from the getgo, Americans celebrated independence on July 4th, which is the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence. Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. This year marks the 238th Anniversary.

Remarkable coincidence is that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.

Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but another Founding Father who became a President, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831, thus becoming the third president in a row who died on this memorable day. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872, and, so far, is the only President to have been born on Independence Day.
