That's how I learned how to sing..." Lauper explained thanks to her mother.

Legendary Lauper has been producing so many meaningful lyrics about acceptance and individuality, and after seeing her in person at a recent fundraiser where she was among the honorees, she doesn’t look a day over 30. Born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper on June 22nd in Ozone Park, Queens, New York City. Her father, Fred Lauper, was of German and Swiss descent and her mother, Catrine, Italian American (from Sicily).

She has an older sister, Elen, and a younger brother, Fred (nicknamed Butch).

Lauper first achieved success in the early 1980s with the release of her debut solo album She's So Unusual in 1983, which was an instant commercial success. It spawned four top five hits on the Billboard Hot 100—"Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night".

It became the first album in history recorded by a female artist to achieve this, and earned Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985. Her success continued with True Colors in 1986, which included two Billboard Hot 100 hits: The number one "True Colors" and "Change of Heart", which peaked at number 3. She also earned two nominations at the 29th Grammy Awards in 1987.

In January 2010, American toy company Mattel released a Cyndi Lauper Barbie doll as part of their "Ladies of the 80s" series.

In March 2010, NBC began airing the ninth season of The Celebrity Apprentice featuring Lauper and other celebrities such as Sharon Osbourne and Bret Michaels. The show had been filmed from October 19, 2009 to November 12, 2009. Donald Trump fired her on the May 9, 2010, episode, leaving her in sixth place. Lauper donated her winnings to her own True Colors Fund. In the season finale, she performed her upcoming album Memphis Blues in front of the boardroom live.

Lauper has been married to David Thornton since 1991. They have one son, Declyn Wallace Thornton (born 1997). Lauper was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic school. She refers to herself as a "Recovering Catholic.”

On June 24, 2012, Lauper appeared as a Grand Marshall for the annual Gay Pride Parade in New York City. She also discussed the contributions of her organization the "True Colors fund" to the LGBT community, and later performed that evening for a Pride event as well.

Lauper composed music for the musical show Kinky Boots with Harvey Fierstein, based on the 2006 independent film "Kinky Boots". The musical opened in Chicago in October 2012 and on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 4, 2013. The musical leads the 2013 Tony Awards with 13 nominations including best original score. In May Lauper won for best score for Kinky Boots at the 63th annual awards by New York’s Outer Critics Circle, the show also won Best musical and Best Actor for Billy Porter.

Lauper made international news in March 2011 while waiting for a delayed flight at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires. There, she gave an impromptu performance of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, as other passengers joined in and sang along with her. A video of the performance was later posted on YouTube.

Cropped hair-dos, gracious greecian up-dos, plain pony-tails and French twists, over-done eyelashes, natural eyelashes, over-outlined eyebrows, bushy eyebrows, plain pink lipsticks, dark red lipsticks, pencil-straight pants, wide-legged pants, bold-striped Tees, button-down shirts, ruffled blouses, strapless, turtleneck, you name it, Hepburn's glamorized and signatured it.

Any make-up she'd smudge on or apparel she'd wear would become the latest fad.

Hepburn was classic yet broke many rules from over-sized, overdone, stylizing menswear glorifying pinstripe suits, bow-ties and penny-loafers.

Hepburn transformed a simple "little black dress" into elegance and stunning formal wear into fashion statements.

Hepburn's beauty will always be ageless and her iconic style always timeless.

Surprisingly, according to an April 2013 Vanity Fair article, according to her son, Luca Dotti, Hepburn never thought she was beautiful.




THE LIFE OF AUDREY HEPBURN ON WIKIPEDIA

Born in 48 Rue Keyenveld, Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, Hepburn spent her childhood between Belgium, England and the Netherlands, including German-occupied Arnhem during the Second World War. Her father, Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston (1889–1980), was a British subject born in Úžice, Bohemia, to Anna Ruston née Wels of Austrian descent and Victor John George Ruston of British and Austrian descent. A one-time honorary British consul in the Dutch East Indies, Ruston had earlier been married to Cornelia Bisschop, a Dutch heiress.

Although born Ruston, he later double-barrelled the surname to the more "aristocratic" Hepburn-Ruston, mistakenly believing himself descended from James Hepburn, third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra (1900–1984), was a Dutch aristocrat and the daughter of Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra, who was mayor of Arnhem from 1910 to 1920 and served as Governor of Suriname from 1921 to 1928. Ella's mother was Elbrig Willemine Henriette, Baroness van Asbeck (1873–1939), who was a granddaughter of jurist Dirk van Hogendorp.

The family often travelled between the three countries due to her mother's family in the Netherlands and her father's British background and job with a British company.

With her multinational background, she went on to speak fluent English, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian. Hepburn participated in ballet by the age of 5.

In Amsterdam, she studied ballet with Sonia Gaskell before moving to London in 1948 to continue her ballet training with Marie Rambert and perform as a chorus girl in West End musical theatre productions. She spoke several languages including English, French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, and German.

After appearing in several British films and starring in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi, Hepburn played the Academy Award-winning lead role in Roman Holiday (1953). She went on to star in a number of successful films, such as Sabrina (1954), The Nun's Story (1959), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Charade (1963), My Fair Lady (1964) and Wait Until Dark (1967), for which she received Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations. For her role in Roman Holiday, Hepburn was also the first actress to win an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for a single performance in 1954. The same year, she won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play for Ondine. Hepburn remains one of few people who have won Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards. She won a record three BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress in a Leading Role.

She appeared in fewer films as her life went on, devoting much of her later life to UNICEF. Although contributing to the organization since 1954, she worked in some of the most profoundly disadvantaged communities of Africa, South America and Asia between 1988 and 1992.

She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in December 1992. A month later, Hepburn died of appendiceal cancer at her home in Switzerland at the age of 63.

Carol Burnett reaches the big 080: Happy B-Day to you

American actress, comedienne, singer, and writer; best known for her long-running TV variety show on CBS, The Carol Burnett Show.

From her signature Tarzan yell and left ear pinch what comes to mind whenever I think of Carol Burnett is her amazing accomplishments and presence in the industry. She has achieved so much success on stage, television -- a dozen years of CBS' "The Carol Burnett Show" -- and film in varying genres including dramatic and comedy roles. Happy birthday Carol Burnett!

Born, Carol Creighton on April 26th, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, Burnett was the daughter of Ina Louise (née Creighton), a publicity writer for movie studios, and Joseph Thomas Burnett, a movie theater manager.

Burnett married Don Saroyan on December 15, 1955; they divorced in 1962. On May 4, 1963, Burnett married TV producer Joe Hamilton, a divorced father of eight, who had produced her 1962 Carnegie Hall concert and would produce The Carol Burnett Show, among other projects. The couple had three daughters: Carrie Hamilton December 5, 1963, died on January 20, 2002 Jody Hamilton January 18, 1967 (age 46) Erin Hamilton August 14, 1968 (age 44)

Their marriage ended in divorce in 1984, and Hamilton died of cancer in 1991. On November 24, 2001, Burnett married Brian Miller (principal drummer in and contractor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra), who is 23 years her junior.

In January 2002, Burnett's daughter Carrie died of lung and brain cancer at the age of 38. She had become addicted to drugs as a teenager. Burnett and Carrie wrote a play together called Hollywood Arms, which was adapted from Burnett's bestselling memoir, One More Time.

The Broadway production featured Linda Lavin as the Burnett character's beloved grandmother, Sara Niemietz and Donna Lynne Champlin shared the role of Helen (Carol Burnett), and Michele Pawk played the role of the mother, Louise. For her performance, Pawk received the 2003 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.

Burnett's daughter Erin became a singer. Since the 1960s, Burnett has been best friends with Julie Andrews. Burnett is the godmother of Julie's first child Emma Walton Hamilton.

Google celebrates 81st birthday of Miriam Makeba

Google celebrates 81st birthday of Miriam Makeba, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miriam_Makeba nicknamed Mama Africa, who was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist. Makeba was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music in the U.S. and around the world.

Born Zenzile Miriam Makeba, Makeba’s famous song was “Pata Pata,” also a dance that was first released in 1957 and released in the U.S. ten years later.

She actively campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. As a result, the South African government revoked her citizenship and right of return in 1959 and was exiled for 30 years. As the apartheid system crumbled she returned home for the first time in 1990.

In 1966, Makeba received the Grammy Award for Best Folk Recording together with Harry Belafonte for “An Evening with Belafonte/ Makeba.”

Miriam Makeba was amongst the several popular artists that took part in the Nelson Mandela 70th birthday tribute festival on 11 June 1988.

Makeba died after a massive heart attack on 9 November 2008 (at 76 years old) after performing in a concert in Italy organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organization local to the region of Campania that murdered Ghanian immigrants.



Today, March 4, 2013 Google celebrated Miriam Makeba with an artistic African motif styled doodle.
